NEW YORK – Stocks rose Thursday, extending their gains from the day before, after reports on housing, manufacturing and jobs all indicated that the economy continues to grow.

Pending sales of previously owned US homes rebounded unexpectedly in July and new claims for jobless benefits fell last week, helping dampen fears the economy could face a double dip recession.

New York ( FT ) — Ben Bernanke, Federal Reserve chairman, said on Friday that weaker-than-expected consumer spending growth and a “depressed” housing market had slowed the pace of the US recovery and promised that the central bank was ready to take “unconventional” steps to stimulate the economy if needed.
